It's Time for a Change

Here is my tax plan. It’s not impossible and it’s not the end all be all. However it is a common sense approach to a complex problem, and it brings relief to most, including the most vulnerable. It needs to implemented in its entirerty to work. One single piece will be a waste of time.

  1. Force local cities and counties to STOP spending like they just won the lottery. (This can happen by mandating local elections to identify party affiliation)… just a start. (I can wish)
  2. Allow school districts the authority (with limits) to collect impact fees. This will allow growth to pay for growth, and alleviate the biggest impact on a tax bill.
  3. Re-structure the circuit breaker exemptions. Do not just change some limits like the grocery tax, lets revamp it to help the low income home owners.Increase the exemption and examine the income requirements.
  4. Freeze the assesment of the retired. Meaning that at the age of 65 your property tax assesment freezes at that number until death or you sell the home. This helps our retired folks on a pension.
  5. Create a sliding scale rating for disabled veterans and their assesments. Meaning that a 40% disability rating will reduce your assesment x amount as will 50% and 60% etc. Those that are 100% have a new policy in place, and I am waiting to see the reduction numbers on it.

These simple but comprehensive steps cover most Idaho property tax payers. We still pay property taxes to keep services etc. But the increases will be paid for by growth. We will also protect the most vulnerable.
